GEORGE LOWREY - ARTIST STATEMENT
My body of work exists in a space between worlds—where the language of comics, cartoons, and underground illustration collides with the infinite unknown. I’m drawn to the strange gravity of emotion, the complexities of modern life, and the desire to communicate what’s just beyond language. Through stylized figuration, saturated color, and dynamic composition, I create characters and environments that feel like transmissions from another dimension—satellites of human experience orbiting the surreal and the sacred.
I create within a self-contained universe — one shaped by sound, myth, memory, and motion. My work treats art as a vessel: for time travel, for transformation, and for escape. Space is more than a setting; it's a metaphor for interior life, for possibility, for the in-between. Whether through cosmic landscapes, psychological interiors, or the suspended, dreamlike states my figures occupy, I explore the gravity-defying nature of imagination. The work floats, fractures, and recomposes itself — always orbiting the edge of the known.
My practice is shaped by over a decade working alongside Todd James (aka REAS), whose influence continues to inform my approach to color, rhythm, and character. I’m also inspired by Barry McGee (aka Twist), whose work and curatorial vision have helped shape a generation of artists grounded in street aesthetics and visual storytelling. These influences converge in my painting process, where motion, mood, and mythology intermingle.
My artwork has been featured in Go Figure at Over the Influence in Hong Kong (curated by Todd James), The Hood Reclaims at Village Works, and Cherry Picking at The Hole in Tribeca (both curated by Barry McGee). As both an artist and cosmic observer, I continue to explore new dimensions of representation, storytelling, and transcendence through my evolving body of work.
